Tangy, flavorful ranch dip can be made from scratch in just 5 minutes!

Whether we are snacking on fresh vegetables, dipping roasted potatoes or Southwest Chicken Bites into this ranch, or tossing it with a salad, this quick and easy homemade ranch dip is a staple in our lives.

Tangy homemade ranch dip tastes so much better than anything you can buy.

In my quest to eliminate many processed foods from our lives, I began playing with ranch dressing recipes about 10 years ago.

We’ve been making this dip for a number of years now and after a bit of tweaking, we’ve declared it absolutely perfect. And as it turns out, many of you agree!

There is always a container of ranch dip in our refrigerator along with a box of ready to eat vegetables for snacking. (Check out this post for tips on storing all your fresh produce to keep it fresh for as long as possible!)

If you happen to need a dairy-free option, you can make your own Dairy Free Sour Cream! (It really works!)

If you have an abundance of fresh herbs on hand, here’s a recipe for Ranch Dip made with fresh herbs.

Tangy homemade ranch dip tastes so much better than store-bought.

The extra dill in this dip really kicks the flavor up a notch and the squeeze of lemon provides plenty of tang. My older boys can stir together a batch of this dip in just a few minutes.

Keeping our refrigerator stocked with ranch dip is one of their jobs. The dip will keep nicely in the refrigerator for up to a week, but it rarely lasts that long in our house.

I often pair this ranch dip with some grilled chicken and vegetables for an easy dinner.

Snackable ranch dip is a big favorite

Homemade Dip Recipes

We love having fresh dips in the house for snacking. This Southwest Ranch Dipping Sauce is a fun, spicy twist on the original Ranch Dip.

Homemade Tzatziki Sauce by Kalyn’s Kitchen is next on my list to try. I love tzatziki with cucumbers or Laffa Bread.

Dill Pickle Dip is a tasty snack with pretzels, crackers, or vegetables.

Fresh Corn Dip with Bacon, Avocados, and Tomatoes disappears lightning fast any time we make it.

Spicy Hot Jalapeno Ranch Dip is a favorite with Sean and Sam both. (My oldest son would happily dip everything he eats in a spicy sauce.)

Homemade French Onion Dip by Rachel Cooks is also on my list to try. I’m betting it’s going to be a hit with my whole family.

Ranch Dip is everyone's favorite dip for vegetables or for chips

Ingredient Substitutions for Ranch Dip

Lemon juice is my first choice when making this dip. However, if you happen to be out of lemons, vinegar works as well.

We use the full tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar for this recipe, feel free to adjust it for your tastes if you don’t care for as tangy a ranch dip.

We like the full 3/4 teaspoon of dried dill in this recipe, feel free to adjust that to taste as well. if you would rather not have such a strong dill flavor.

This will keep nicely for several days. (Technically, it will be fine as long as the dairy ingredients are good for, but ours never lasts that long!)

  4. Adriana says:

Never going back to store bought! I used plain full fat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream and it was great! I also added some fresh chives to make it taste even fresher.5 stars

  7. Alicia says:

So yummy. Trying to limit my dairy intake so I used vegan mayo (shhh don’t tell my guests) and no one even noticed. So simple yet so delicious, and so much better for you than the packaged stuff!5 stars

    1. Mary Younkin says:

I’m guessing you meant vegan sour cream, since there is no dairy in mayo. 😉 But either way, YAY for making it work for you! I’m glad you like it.

  8. Terri says:

  9. Kelly says:

This is so wonderful! Why, oh why, did I ever buy the package Ranch dressing mix? I used Greek yogurt instead of the sour cream. So good!5 stars

I’m thrilled that you like it so much, Kelly.

  10. Hope You See This says:

Hi I wanted to correct your rude reply about vegan mayo. Mayo is not vegan because of EGGS, not just dairy. Ffs they literally sell vegan mayo

    1. Mary Younkin says:

It certainly wasn’t my intention to be unkind or rude. Sorry to see you took it that way. I keep vegan mayo in my fridge as well and use it when I’m cooking for a friend who can not have eggs. However, the original comment that was left specified that she was “dairy free” not that she was vegan. For anyone who does happen to be vegan or allergic to eggs, vegan mayo is a terrific option as well.

    2. Sigh says:

I’m guessing the irony of rudely ranting about someone being rude went completely over your head.

  11. Justin says:

I personally have dull taste buds and over season everything, but kept the ratio in the recipe and it’s a really nice dip. Thank you! if it helps anyone, I mixed mine in a 1 quart bowl that I had a lid for and it was enough room to mix without making a mess, but still looked full and presentable to bring to an event.5 stars

  13. Sharon says:

I’ve always shied away from making my own ranch dip since quite a few only call for fresh herbs which I rarely have in hand. This recipe is easy and delicious! Brilliant!5 stars

  14. Sarah J says:

ADDICTIVELY DELICIOUS! AND SO SIMPLE! My MIL loves ranch dressing but is on a low-salt diet, and store bought dips are so high in salt. I’ve made this as is, and also without any salt, and it’s fantastic either way. Thank you so much for the recipe!5 stars

    1. Mary Younkin says:

I’m happy to hear that you love it!

  15. Brian says:

I used more sour cream than mayo because large quantities of mayo freak me out. 2:1 sc to mayo. delish.5 stars

    1. Mary Younkin says:

It’s completely adaptable, Brian. I like the flavor best with the mayo, but I often make it with just the sour cream too!

mmmm that sounds like an excellent variation!

  18. Missy says:

GREAT! Made with yogurt before and as written! Either way is great! I mix up a 4X batch of just the herbs and keep it on hand in my spice rack and use to season chicken etc etc For the spice mix I use powdered lemon5 stars

      I’m glad you’re enjoying it!

  19. Missy says:

Wonderful! I recommend following the recipe then letting it sit in the fridge for a couple hours to blend the flavors BEFORE adding more spices! I inadvertently added too much garlic by altering it too early! lol
