As I’ve mentioned before, we make a lot of smoothies in this house. I had so many smoothie pictures waiting to be posted, I decided to go ahead and just make today the day of smoothies. Enjoy!
Blueberries, bananas, spinach, and chia seeds combined to make these pretty purple smoothies. I love the addition of chia seeds, but if you are unsure about trying them or if you don’t have them on hand, these smoothies are still delicious without them. Don’t care for spinach, no worries make a Banana Blueberry Chia Smoothie.
If you would like to read more about chia seeds, you can see this post and check out the first smoothie I made with them.
Blueberry Chia Banana Spinach Smoothie
Ingredients
- 1 cup orange juice
- 2 generous handfuls baby spinach
- 3/4 cup blueberries frozen
- 1 banana frozen or fresh
- 1/2 cup ice
- 1 teaspoon chia seeds
Instructions
- Layer all the ingredients except the chia seeds into the blender in the order listed. Blend until smooth. Add the chia seeds and blend once more. Serve immediately. (The chia seeds will thicken the smoothie if it is allowed to sit for too long before being drinking.)
- This smoothie was extra thick and we all loved it. My boys had a great time eating theirs with spoons.

What a great idea to incorporate spinach in this combination. So not spinach lovers no more excuses;)

This is one of our favorite combinations, too! We'll add yogurt in for some extra protein sometimes, giving it a creamier consistency. I'm not a big fan of eating fresh blueberries alone (texture thing for me), but one of these a few times a week – yum!!

I can drink this…. that is if I leave out most of the OJ. To much sugar in it for me.
I use a lot of chia seeds here. Have you ever sprouted them? Rembember the chia pets.
I use the sprouts in my salads.

Also want to add that this is a super beneficial smoothie for the blood type O diet. The only thing I had to substitute was the orange juice. I just used water with a good squeeze of lemon. Great stuff!

If you soak your chia which makes a chia gel, it won't thicken when added to your smoothie

Without having seen this post I just made almost this exact combo (minus the ice and only about 1/3 banana-the banana slices were frozen) and mine came out green. How did you get yours to come out purple?!

Tastes. Great but one of the big mistakes is adding juice. It,s high in calories and low in fiber and overall nutrition. Also adding ice is not good for absorption.

The beauty of smoothies is how adaptable they are. Feel free to adjust the ingredients to best suit your tastes, Rena.
