Some foods are so basic, so incredibly simple, that it can be difficult to describe their awesomeness. That’s how I feel about cottage cheese with fruit. Two ingredients. Just TWO.

And yet, cottage cheese and berries have a permanent place in my refrigerator. Whether this is my breakfast, an afternoon snack, or a sweet bite after dinner, I eat this nearly every single day.

Cottage Cheese with Fruit

About a year ago, a friend mentioned to me how much he enjoyed eating cottage cheese with berries after his workouts. I hadn’t tried that combination before, never having been a huge fan of cottage cheese. (I was always a Greek yogurt girl before and usually with a bunch of other things added to it.)

If I’m being honest, the amount of protein in the cottage cheese was what finally got me to try it. Oh. My. Word. I had been missing out! (Sorry, Lynne, for all the times I messed with you for enjoying cottage cheese so much. Turns out I just hadn’t tried the right combination.)

Cottage Cheese with Berries

Growing up, we always had cottage cheese in the house. It was usually eaten plain and that’s about all I remembered. I’ve certainly baked with it and I do enjoy it with a dash of pepper and some sliced tomatoes. But it has never been a go-to food that I craved.

That all changed last year. While there are endless ways you can make your fruit and cottage cheese bowls fancier, my daily routine is simply a scoop of cottage cheese and a generous handful of blueberries.

Fruit and Cottage Cheese

You’ll need the following ingredients to make this recipe:

  • cottage cheese
  • berries
  • optional: cinnamon, nuts, honey or maple syrup

What fruit goes with cottage cheese? Pretty much anything you’d like! I enjoy cottage cheese with every kind of berry, frozen mango chunks, frozen cherries, peaches, and pineapple too.

Just a note – all cottage cheese is not created the same. Try them out until you find one that works for you! My personal preference is full fat (4%), small curd cottage cheese.

I’ve tried pretty much every name-brand cottage cheese and (strangely enough) I tend to like the store-brands best. Kroger and Meijer happen to be two of my favorite store brands.

I often prepare this in individual portions in advance and stash the cottage cheese with fruit cups in the fridge until I’m ready to eat them. They’ll keep nicely for several days and I can just grab one after a workout or for an afternoon snack whenever I want one.

Cheesy Scrambled Eggs with Spinach is another simple dish that’s so packed with good-for-you ingredients that we call them “Power Eggs.” This hearty Popeye-approved breakfast is a deliciously easy way to energize your morning.

These one-bowl Cottage Cheese Pancakes are beautifully fluffy and loaded with protein. The recipe multiplies nicely for a family breakfast or brunch for a crowd.

    Mary,
My husband and I eat plain Greek yougurt with cinnamon, a combo of hemp, chia, and flax seeds, and a generous helping of strawberries/blueberries for breakfast. For some crunch, we toss on a half cupof Cheerios or a crunchy cereal. With a cup of coffee, this makes a healthful, easy breakfast. I eat my cottage cheese with fruit for an afternoon or evening snack. There is always a few containers of cottage cheese and a 2 lb tub of yogurt in our fridge. Yummo!

It sounds like we could happily eat in each other’s homes, Barbara. 🙂
