ABOUT

Hi, and welcome! I’m thrilled that you are here.

My name is Mary and I’ve been sharing recipes online since 2011. I created Barefeet in the Kitchen to share recipes with friends and family and I quickly discovered that sharing recipes online is a whole lot of fun.

People come to Barefeet In The Kitchen looking for recipes and help to get meals on the table with a minimum of fuss. There are over 1500 recipes on this website, all made from scratch as simply as possible.

Mary Younkin - creator of Barefeet In The Kitchen

Welcome to Barefeet In The Kitchen

I love food. I love simple foods, gourmet foods, junk foods, healthy foods, you name it. I love dark chocolate, giant salads, medium rare steaks, perfect mojitos, spicy green chile, chips and salsa, homemade ice cream, grocery store ice cream, artisan ice cream, gelato, and frozen yogurt. Did I mention I love ice cream?

You know what else I really love? Vegetables – but that has not always been the case! Learning how to properly cook vegetables AND make them interesting has been a dinner-time game changer.

I love sharing recipes with you so much that I also have a website dedicated to everything vegetables – VegetableRecipes.com. Why start a brand new site that’s all about vegetables? Because vegetables don’t have to be boring and I’ve grown to truly love them. Every recipe there features at least one vegetable, though some recipes feature many more.

Recipes

I love recipes. I love old recipes, new recipes, my grandmother’s recipes, my sister’s recipes, my friends’ recipes, recipes that readers send me. I especially love creating recipes, because when I wake up dreaming of a plate piled high with Frito Pie Huevos Rancheros, that needs to happen stat.

I believe that recipes were meant to be shared, altered, passed around, and remade time and time again. I love hearing when you’ve made a recipe and how you might have made it your own as well.

Cookbooks

My first cookbook, The Weeknight Dinner Cookbook, is dedicated to my passion for creating family-friendly meals that are easy enough to make on a busy weeknight. The book is filled with recipes that are accessible for both new and experienced home cooks, always with an abundance of flavor.

My second cookbook, The Weekday Lunches and Breakfasts Cookbook, is filled with easy, family-friendly, and delicious recipes for every meal of the day. With these two cookbooks, you’ll have an abundance of recipes at your fingertips to pull together made from scratch, homemade meals with very little effort or time spent in the kitchen.

My third cookbook, The Weeknight Dessert Cookbook, is a collection of dessert recipes that have all been streamlined to be fast and simple, while still producing show-stopping results. When dinner is over and you’re craving something sweet to end the day, this is the cookbook you’ll want to have at your fingertips. With only a handful of common pantry ingredients and 5 to 15 minutes of hands-on prep, you can pull together an impressive dessert in very little time at all.

All three cookbooks are available on Amazon or in your local bookstores.

Feeding the Hungry

I’m passionate about helping feed the hungry and I’ve shared a bit about my childhood here before. I learned a lot from countless meals of plain beans and rice. I learned to be grateful for every single thing in my life. There may never be anything more beautiful to me than a full pantry.

See the ads all over our website? Could you possibly miss them? Every time those ads load on your screen it sends a few cents our way.

Those ads make this website possible and Barefeet In The Kitchen gives a percentage of all ad revenue back to the community through Feeding America and through our local food banks.

Feeding America is the largest domestic hunger-relief organization, with a network of over 200 food banks and 60,000 food pantries and meal programs that provide food and services to people each year. Every dollar donated helps provide ten meals for the hungry.

If you’re looking for a hands-on way to help your local community today, filling a few Sack Lunches for the Homeless just might bless you every bit as much as it helps feed those in need.

The Little Things

On the weekends, I share a glimpse into our life and a scattering of my thoughts in The Little Things Newsletter. I love sharing stories of kindness, inspiring stories, stories designed to make you ponder something new. (You’ll find the signup for the newsletter at the top of this page and in the sidebar.)

I love to travel almost as much as I love being home. It’s not unusual for me to start planning the next trip on the way home from the last one. Whether it’s time spent visiting family or time spent exploring another country, the anticipation is half the fun.

I can be reached through email at [email protected]. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter.
